Taylor Russell McKenzie was conceived in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 18th, 1994. She was also raised in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Russell was born to both black and white parents. She grew up with her mother's side. She claimed that the color of her skin was the primary reason why she was at odds with her peers as a child. The family struggled financially. They were always moving and moved sixteen times in an attempt to assist her father's career. Russell said that despite the struggles they faced, there was always an opportunity to reinventthemselves, to create something new. Russell's parents struggled financially and she was always traveling. Russell was eighteen when she started her first acting class. She saved her money from work to buy an automobile and drove to Los Angeles to audition. If her funds ran out her home was returned to work, until she made enough money for a second audition. This process continued for four years, and it took until she landed her first major TV appearance.
